WE HAVE YET TO ROSTER A TIME FOR DISCOVERY BUT A NOTE WILL COME HOME REGARDING THIS.
The programme had been designed by a Brenda Martin, A Resource Teacher in Literacy and Behaviour and Gay Hay, an experienced teacher and literacy leader.
So what is Discovery Time?
Discovery Time provides opportunities for students to:
• Direct their own learning.
• Participate in new experiences.
• Encounter challenges
• Extend existing skills.
• Develop new skills.
• Work co-operatively
• Interact socially.
For teachers to:
• Provide fun learning experiences.
- Spend quality time with individuals.
• Observe students in a range of situations.
• Cater for students’ individual learning needs – including gifted and talented
• Meet curriculum demands.
And for schools to:
• Involve their community.
• Extend home school partnerships.
At first glance Discovery Time appears to be one and a half hours a week of free choice activity. But this belies the careful planning, the focus on students taking responsibility for their learning, and the emphasis on reflecting and sharing, that goes into each session.
For this programme to work we do need parent help. It does not have to be every week, once during the term or every fortnight would be great. Please come in and see and me and I will put you on a roster.
